National Museum of the American Latino - Bisma Jhamat, Week 3

National Musuem of the American Latino - Bisma Jhamat, Week 3

               Semana Tres, Con Lucky Diaz!

Hola todos,

I can’t believe we’re already on week three! I feel like time is just passing by so quickly. This week was quite the experience, so buckle your seat beats and get ready for takeoff 😄🛫!

As mentioned at the end of last week’s blog (which hopefully you all read, and if not, you must read it first!) This week I had the amazing opportunity to read with the one and only Lucky Diaz! Lucky Diaz is not only a multi-Grammy award-winning and six-time Emmy-nominated musician, but also an excellent children’s book author! I had the pleasure of having him join me for my community outreach event.

A little background, YAP requires each intern to host a community outreach event in their local area as a way to promote early childhood literacy. I was able to help conduct this event at the National Museum of the American Latino (aka where I work) with over 70+ people in attendance!

This day was also very special because, for those who don’t know, Presente! Will be closed until the Springtime, since we are introducing a new exhibit, Puro Ritmo! In correlation with my story time, we also had final tours of the exhibit, book signings with author Lucky Diaz, a raffle, free paletas, y mucho mas! It was a memorable event for sure 😄.

Through my community outreach event, I was able to become more aware of early childhood literacy and how vital it is for children to be exposed to it as early as possible. Being able to read is a significant skill everyone should know, and I was grateful to be surrounded by others with the same initiative.

On Wednesday, I was able to attend a meeting about our new exhibit, Puro Ritmo! The new exhibit will have a “concert” mode in which it will play sound and music throughout the gallery; however, we wanted to see how we can diminish the sound when needed. We were able to meet with, Rebecca, who is our project manager, and she provided us feedback on the different features the new exhibit will have. Here are a few sneak peeks: dance mode, show mode, tour/education mode and morning at the museum mode😉!

As for Friday, we got to bring our caritos (little carts) out in front of the gallery and test out some prototypes! We had a table set up with interactive Puro Ritmo! displays such as the clave and an orchestra band. Museum visitors were able to test out the prototypes and give us feedback on little notecards. I find it so thrilling that someone’s contribution as small as providing feedback plays an immense role in the new exhibit! Crazy to think about!

Our flight has now landed! Thanks for boarding Semana Tres, Con Lucky Diaz! Feel free to unbuckle your seatbelts and grab your belongings on the way out. Also, make sure to leave a good comment for the captain, she would really appreciate it! Hasta Luego 🛬!!

P.S. Stay tuned for the FINAL blog coming to theaters near you next Friday 😃.
