Dixon Gallery and Gardens-Fatima Hernandez, Week 2

Dixon Gallery and Gardens-Fatima Hernandez, Week 2

Buenas!

This marks my second week for my internship at the Dixon and it was, no doubt, just as exciting as the first!

Monday

I began the day with a tour of the new exhibition featuring Susan Watkins as the central theme of the art surrounded the representing Women in the Arts. The tour guide was impeccable as he spoke about the importance of exhibitions such as these as it brings forth a diverse perspective in history—one that many seem to forget. Afterwards, I worked on one of my ongoing projects which included brainstorming ideas for a pop up and family night.

Wednesday

My work on Wednesday included helping out with the programs that the Dixon offered. In the morning, a camp arrived and I was working with them on an activity which included creating a collaged interior. Like the previous week, I helped with Mini Masters, the theme of the day being Frogs!! They were able to dress up as frogs using unusual items such as party poppers and face masks. We ended the day with an activity in which the kids were able to color and design their own frog.

Thursday

On Thursday, I spent most of my time working on the activities that I had brainstormed in order for it to be ready for the meeting the next morning. The Dixon has always took pride in their activities as it gives those less fortunate an opportunity to experience art in an educational setting. One of the values that I have learned here so far is that art should always be accessible, no matter the cost. In the afternoon, however, I mostly worked on aiding the afternoon classes that were present which included yoga and watercolor. During this time, I was able to meet a volunteer who was the sweetest as she talked to me about her time with her internship at the Dixon.

Friday

Friday was by far my busiest day but it was worth all the effort. With Cameron, the Outreach Instructor, we went to a nearby church to give the kids a chance to make an artistic activity. With four groups in total, we colored and designed beautiful flowers for them to take home. Afterwards, back at the Dixon, we gave a tour to a program that was for kids who had experienced homelessness. Even with their situation, the kids seemed to have the best of time and were so happy when they were able to make a collaged room at the end!! The Dixon, which includes free admission for all, fosters an environment in which any and everyone can enjoy the arts as they strengthen the value of education within less fortunate communities.

Until next time!
