Dixon Gallery and Gardens—Fatima Hernandez Week 1
Dixon Gallery and Gardens—Fátima Hernàndez Week 1
Buenas Damas y Caballeros!
The first week I spent at the Dixon has been anything if not extraordinary. Walking in, I immediately got to know the wonderful and kind staff that would be assisting me, however as I (proudly) have been going to the Dixon since I was but a mini master at the age of 5-6, I already felt comfortable knowing my way around. Margarita, the Education Director for the Dixon, gave me run down of what is to be expected and so kindly would offer me food from time to time (I mostly spent my money at the savory café on site).
For the first week I assisted with setting up the upcoming CREATE exhibition. One of my most memorable (and grueling) task was puffing up the styrofoam blocks for the interactive activities. The blocks were meant to magically puff up after being let out of the plastic, however, as fate would have it, they stayed compacted to which I had to first massage them out, then use an iron to steam them until I got UPGRADED!! to a steamer which worked wonderfully. In the end, after endless hours, we managed to puff up most of the blocks with the power of friendship and an Amazon steamer.
Another job as an intern that I had the pleasure of helping with was the programs that they offered for the young ones over the summer. I assisted first with Sarah, a youth programs art instructor, for the Mini Masters program (The Nostalgia!!). I watched over the activities and the splendid story time, taking notes for when I would have to do my own. Later on in the week I also assisted with the older group of kids with K club as they had fun with their sports day.
I cannot express how amazing it has been to intern at the Dixon and I cannot wait to come back next week.
¡Nos Vemos!
Fátima Hérnandez
