El Paso Museum of History – Andres Valle, Week 2
Howdy from Texas!
Last week, I had to take off, so consider this to be week two of four. The first week, nonetheless, was incredibly informative—learning much about El Paso and the people who built it from the ground up.
Monday:
The week started off with my storytime at the El Paso library. I was excited to face the challenge of public speaking head-on, but with the rain, and especially being Monday, the number of attendees was low—none, in fact. Although I was disappointed by this turnout (hint: 0), I found comfort in meeting two amazing individuals, Erica and Ana, who recommended holding the storytime during a weekend, the library’s busier days, and bringing paletas for the kids to enjoy. I’ll have to let you all know how it turns out!
Tuesday:
The El Paso Museum of History, in the next couple of weeks, is opening a new exhibit, which will highlight East and Southeast Asian American culture in El Paso. My supervisor, Nora, explained that Asian Americans who immigrated from El Paso were often grouped together; in a predominantly Spanish-speaking city, most Asians were classified as “Chino”—Chinese in Spanish. And as the nature of history tends to be vague, Nora and I went visiting local Asian-owned businesses, seeing if anyone would like to contribute to the exhibit through newspapers, stories, pictures, and the like. Tuesday was a lot of walking, but as Nora put it, "Door-to-door knocking is one of the many popular ways of community involvement"—so I best get used to it.
Thursday:
This day was a lot calmer than the rest; I spent the morning uploading photos to the digital library until it, unfortunately, crashed. From there, I researched my capstone project (look at week 1 for a recap, I guess), exploring the ways different cultures, mainly Hispanic, considering we’re a border city, have taken care of and understood mental health, as well as the stigma that surrounds it.
Friday:
Friday came around, and I pretty much spent the day researching a topic that interests me and as it pertains to El Paso—a cooler, much chiller day! Still loved every part of it :D
