History Colorado Center – Elizabeth Bello Aldaco, Week 1
July 11, 2025
Hi Everyone!
Monday, July 7th, was my first day at the History of Colorado Center! Although I live about 30 minutes away, I have never visited the museum, I wasn't aware of how much I was missing out on!
When I got there, my amazing supervisor, April, was waiting for me at the door. She started by teaching me how to log into the volunteer page and checking out an ID so that I would have access to open all of the doors. Then, she gave me tour of the museum, and she introduced me to most of the staff. My first day was mainly exploring and familiarizing myself with the museum, artifacts, exhibits, and offices. For this reason, I realized that there are so many different careers and teams that uphold a museum, without all of them, museums and history would be VERY limited.
This week as an intern, my assignments have been to research about Colorado's symbols, important people, and its history on how it became the 38th star, attend meetings to meet the education staff and go over our research goals/updates, and volunteer at "Camp Colorado".
(I forgot to take many pictures, but here is my nametag and some moments during camp Colorado!)
Camp Colorado is a safe and engaging opportunity where elementary and middle school kids can learn about the history of Colorado through lessons, hands-on activities, visiting exhibits, and trying out new things! This week, we explored Colorado's mountains and ecosystems.Did I mention that The United States turns 250 years next year and Colorado 150 years?! For that reason, my research this week mainly focused on the history of how Colorado became a state after 5 tries! We are planning on opening an exhibit for that next year, but no one, besides us, know that yet.
I had the opportunity to get a little behind the scenes of how artifacts are stored and taken care of, we learned about this during our week at Washington, so I was excited that I had a little bit of background knowledge. April set up a behind the scenes tour next week for that, and another tour to explore the Center for Colorado Women's History (she is also working on getting me a tour at Colorado's Capitol to help with my research)! A lot of the museums in Denver are near by each other, so I am truly thankful for the privilege that I have to increase my knowledge through this journey.
Thank you for reading, see you next week!
- Elizabeth :)
