Oregon Museum of Science and Industry - Keila Gonzalez Salazar, Week 3

 Keila @ OMSI!!

My internship cohort <3

Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a wonderful day and continue to have an amazing week! Now, let's get to the recap of Week 3! It was busy, busy, BUSY!!! So let's get to it!!!

Making a mind map

On the bright and early morning of Wednesday,  I ended up straight away in an early meeting with the rest of my intern cohort. We were led by one of the wonderful mentors, Alexis! She gave us a presentation and workshop on how to project plan. Specifically, the basics of the discovery and research part of a project. It was fun while being super informative. I am truly amazed by all the wonderful knowledge I am able to learn from all the experienced staff at OMSI!!

Sticker Prototype

In the afternoon, I started making and testing a prototype of my tote bag design! As one of the key steps in project planning is prototyping!!! To create this design, I learned how to use the Cricut Design Space app! It was actually very easy and simple! I was just overthinking it! But when it came to using the machine, I had a couple of issues, so I watched YouTube videos and, with the guidance of Nina(OMSI staff), I was able to cut and print this design!!!! The only issue was that we figured out it was the wrong type of material, so I made a sticker prototype instead! But trial and error is key to success, right?! Either way, this came out so cute and taught me to have a great outcome; you have to have patience. For lunch on Thursday, we got an extra-long lunch, YAY! Sadly, it was because it was Karson's last day with us ): But nevertheless, we celebrated the day as best as we could!!! My buddies and I went to the local food carts and got lunch!! I got a delicious chicken Pad Thai and shared a waffle with Karson! It was a well-bought purchase well bought. This taught how to always find joy in sad situations. Also, by making friends in the workplace, you can have more joy in the work you do!

Karson Plus Waffle

My cute Prototype!
During the day on Friday, I found out that our keychain materials arrived!!! Yay!!! I was able to prototype a keychain design!! This prototype came out very beautiful; however, it was something that was unrealistic because it would take too many materials to make. This made me have to change the amount of materials per person and edit my step-by-step instructions for the activity. This process was so challenging and very frustrating because I had never experienced this type of planning before. But with the help of my mentor and interns, I managed to keep calm and figure out what edits I needed to make for my project.  The making process of the instructions taught me so much about creating an instructional piece that is simple yet informative enough for people to understand what to make. While it being for all ages. So shout out to everyone who helps out with creating activities for visitors and making step-by-step instructions!!

Final Presentation

Today in the morning, I got to work on creating my final design of my tote bags!!! The correct material arrived, so I was able to start cutting out the design with the Cricut machine!!! All I have to do on Wednesday is to heat press the design onto my bags! In the afternoon, I worked on my final presentation to present next Friday. I worked on adding all the step-by-step processes that were involved with planning the community outreach booth and my keychain activity!

Thank you for reading!!! Stay tuned for the final blog post next week to find out how the event went and how the totes came out!!
With much love,
Keila <3
