The Museum of Kansas City - Itzel Garcia-Hernandez, Week 3
Hello, everyone! Welcome to week 3 of my internship. This week has been so informative and exhausting, but enjoyable none the less.
July 19
On this day I went to the Mid-Continent Public Library to help Dr. Chavez in a presentation about the tortilla. The guests were able to come into the kitchen in the library and make tortillas while listening to its history. I was in charge of the comal to help guests actually cook their tortillas. It was such an amazing way to share such a common part of my culture with others.

On this day Dr. Chavez took me on a tour of various organizations that have made it their mission to help out the Latino community in Kansas City. I got to see the Don Bosco Center, the Latinx Education Coalition Center, the Mattie Rhodes Center, and Guadalupe Centers. At the end of the day we went to Plaza Branch Library to see a film about how Missouri's supreme court has a female majority. After the film, the current female judges along with the first female judge that served on the Missouri supreme court answered some of the audience's questions.
July 23
I got to go once again to the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center. The kids learned about never poems and rhymes, they continued writing their life stories this time writing about grief and loss, and lastly they worked on a mixed media piece with a mixture of a collage and a painting. It was so nice being able to help them on their projects and seeing how they come along. Volunteering here has certainly been a highlight of my week as well as last week. It is definitely something I would like to keep doing even after my internship ends.
July 24
On this day I got to attend with Dr. Chavez to the UnidosUS conference in El Centro Inc. UnidosUS is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of Hispanic communities and every year they host a conference that anybody can attend; this year it will be in Kansas City and will last 3 days. The meeting I went to was mostly about the planning for the event and the logistics of it. Later on in the day, I got to see Dr. Chavez give a presentation on the history of cowboys/vaqueros.
July 25
Finally, today I mostly helped out in the front desk. All in all it was a pretty relaxing day.
That is all I have for you guys this week. See you all next time!
