Arte Américas - ❀ Isabelle O'Neill ❀, Week 2

☙❂✵Week 2✵❂❧

❦     Hey guys! Week 2 is over, and it was pretty stressful (in a good way)! I showed up to work on Tuesday and attended a Teaching Artist Education workshop held at Arte Américas. I got to meet some really cool people and made a vision board/digital collage of what community means to me and how I identify myself.  I even added some pictures of you guys, as I am very honored to be part of the YAP network!

This is the social contract we created on day 1
❦     Wednesday was day 2 of this training, and we learned a lot about how to create curriculum that meets state education standards, particularly in English Language Arts. We were assigned to grab any kids' books in the room and look for the best ways to engage a classroom with storytelling and art activities. I chose to stick with Paletero Man since we are all assigned to read it anyway! This allowed me to use some critical thinking on the best ways to approach different age levels and retain the same engagement.

❦     Arte actually conducts its own Bilingual Storytime Program, so the teacher training and talks with volunteers often helped prepare me for my own. I was scheduled to complete 2 readings, one on Thursday at Arte Américas, and a second at the West Fresno Library on Friday.

Arte reading!

❦     On Thursday, I attended a bit of the art education workshop, but went to my desk to prepare for my story time, which was set at around 6pm. The crowd turned out to be great! I was a bit nervous, but felt better knowing that with all of my training and support, I had completely memorized the book. After we had finished the reading, we completed a bit of the packet and made ice cream! Arte had done a reading of Paletero Man before, and made their activity ice cream, so I was super excited to make some. Luckily, there were a bit of ingredients left over and I got to make chocolate + oreo ice cream with sprinkles!

❦     Friday was quite different for the story time. I attended at around 10am, already comfortable with the book, and was greeted by a much younger and smaller audience (only 3 kids)! It was a bit challenging trying to keep them engaged since their ages ranged between 1-4; however, thanks to the librarian's encouragement and help, I pushed through the doubt and read the book twice. After this reading, I hung out with the kids and colored in the activity books, a super relaxing time. Week 2 was a major success.

     Fresno Library reading!

Thank you all for reading, and gracias Ford!!!
