The Museum of Kansas City - Itzel Garcia-Hernandez, Week 4

Hello, everyone! Welcome to week 4 of my internship!

July 30

This was when I was finally able to read the Paletero Man at my local library. It was such a great experience to be able to give back to the community at the library I've been going to since I was a little kid. I got there an hour early and was able to meet Lilliana, who is often in charge of bilingual story times every Saturday at the library, she showed me to the room I was going to be using and gave me rundown of how things usually go during a story time. After that all I had to do is wait for everyone to start trickling in so I could get started. After the story time the kids took their seats and got to working on their coloring books while they ate paletas.

After that, Dr. Chavez and I took the opportunity to inform people at the library and other places around the area about different events that were going to be taking place the following week. Which included a car show that will occur in Wyandotte Park, hosted by the LatinX Education Coalition. And a talk at the library by the Smithsonian that will happen in the South Branch Library. I also go to meet some workers from the library that were going to go to Union Station on Saturday for the event the Smithsonian is doing.

July 31 & August 1

These were the last two days that I would be spending at the Museum of Kansas City. I spent the last two days working at the front desk and said my final goodbyes as I was leaving on August 1st. I truly enjoyed my time there and really loved getting to know the people who work there.

August 3rd

This was officially my last day of my internship, and I got to spend it with Adrian and Emily! Today, was the first annual Chicano Heritage Car and Culture Festival at Wyandotte Park, and I got to help Adrian and Emily set up a stand for NMAL to inform everyone there about the different NMAL will be doing in Kansas
City. The day was super fun, I got to see some low rider cars, see some folkloric dancing, and see a new exhibit at the Wyandotte County Museum.
