The Museum of Kansas City - Itzel Garcia-Hernandez, Week 3

Image
Hello, everyone! Welcome to week 3 of my internship. This week has been so informative and exhausting, but enjoyable none the less. July 19 On this day I went to the Mid-Continent Public Library to help Dr. Chavez in a presentation about the tortilla. The guests were able to come into the kitchen in the library and make tortillas while listening to its history. I was in charge of the comal to help guests actually cook their tortillas. It was such an amazing way to share such a common part of my culture with others.  July 22 On this day Dr. Chavez took me on a tour of various organizations that have made it their mission to help out the Latino community in Kansas City. I got to see the Don Bosco Center, the Latinx Education Coalition Center, the Mattie Rhodes Center, and Guadalupe Centers. At the end of the day we went to Plaza Branch Library to see a film about how Missouri's supreme court has a female majority. After the film, the current female judges along with the first female ...

Hello everyone! I can't believe week 3 is done already- time really goes by fast!                  For this past week's schedule, I worked Monday and Friday remotely, Tuesday at the Art Museum, and Wednesday and Thursday at the CRC.            Let's Get Into It!          On Tuesday, I started my day off by joining a meeting between the director of the Art Museum and the Learning and Co-Creation team, which I work for. I learned about their upcoming programs and events, and how they plan to strengthen their presence in the community. It was interesting to listen to, and I got to order Thai food! 😋     I finished creating the Indigenous C...

Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte Melanie Torres Crespo - Week 3 Hi! Welcome to my third week at the Museum of History, Anthropology, and Art. This week was short, nonetheless it was very fun and full of new things! Unfortunately, throughout this whole week, the museum was closed to the public because of some reparations happening in the university campus. But, at least I was able to attend and complete tasks that become harder to do when the museum is open and frequently conducting activities.  This past Monday , I started my day by doing a deep cleaning of the interactive section of the exhibition. More specifically, I cleaned the wood pieces utilized to do engravings. As time passes, they get a lot of crayon wax stuck in the wood, thus it was nice to have the opportunity to clean and restore them.  Moreover, it was nice to learn more about the ways the staff preserves the pieces in the exhibition, in the archives, and even those objects meant to be used by the p...

El Paso Museum of History – Andres Valle, Week 2

Image
Howdy from Texas!  Last week, I had to take off, so consider this to be week two of four. The first week, nonetheless, was incredibly informative—learning much about El Paso and the people who built it from the ground up. Monday : The week started off with my storytime at the El Paso library. I was excited to face the challenge of public speaking head-on, but with the rain, and especially being Monday, the number of attendees was low—none, in fact. Although I was disappointed by this turnout (hint: 0), I found comfort in meeting two amazing individuals, Erica and Ana, who recommended holding the storytime during a weekend, the library’s busier days, and bringing paletas for the kids to enjoy. I’ll have to let you all know how it turns out! Tuesday : The El Paso Museum of History, in the next couple of weeks, is opening a new exhibit, which will highlight East and Southeast Asian American culture in El Paso. My supervisor, Nora, explained that Asian Americans who immigrated fr...

National Hispanic Cultural Center — Fausto Dozal, Week 2

Image
On Monday, July 21st, I met the new interns and we got to explore the collections department, as well as their quarantine building that is used to inspect donated items. We also had a team meeting that served as a Q&A session. On Tuesday, July 22nd, I joined Jadira Gurule, Head Curator, in meeting with the New Mexico State University Art Museum, in which we discussed how educational programs are made, as well as how traveling exhibits are made. We also began inventorying museum supplies as a side task. On Wednesday, July 23rd, I started researching inquiry-based programming using  Project Zero  and  Agency by Design  as inspiration. During this research, I found the theme of  Think, Feel, Care  to be a good starting point for crafting a program that can be tailored towards all age groups. On Thursday, July 24th, I moved onto research regarding museum engagement and developing a physical program that utilizes  Think, Feel, Care  as the b...

National Musuem of the American Latino - Bisma Jhamat, Week 3                   Semana Tres, Con Lucky Diaz ! Hola todos, I can’t believe we’re already on week three! I feel like time is just passing by so quickly. This week was quite the experience, so buckle your seat beats and get ready for takeoff 😄🛫! As mentioned at the end of last week’s blog (which hopefully you all read, and if not, you must read it first!) This week I had the amazing opportunity to read with the one and only Lucky Diaz! Lucky Diaz is not only a multi-Grammy award-winning and six-time Emmy-nominated musician, but also an excellent children’s book author! I had the pleasure of having him join me for my community outreach event.  A little background, YAP requires each intern to host a community outreach event in their local area as a way to promote early childhood literacy. I was able to help conduct this event at the National Museum of the Amer...
